Who says that dairy-free means no treats at Easter? Have you ever heard of No Muu before? Take a look at this!
The shops are full of Easter eggs and chocolate selection boxes at the moment, and have been since the festive stuff came off the shelves back in December!
To be fair, there are a lot of alternatives for people with allergies nowadays. Even just 3 years ago, there was very little choice available. What was available, certainly wasn’t child friendly.
Last year, we put a list together of the Easter treats you could buy. This year, we thought we’d go one further and give you an option you can make! Don’t worry, we’ve kept it as simple as possible, we promise!
All you will need to do, is get creative with how you present it, so that it’s appealing to whoever is lucky enough to receive it!
But, we've also got a little something extra for you!
We've teamed up with our lovely friends at No Muu Chocolate to bring you a truly fab giveaway and a wonderful recipe which incorporates their delicious chocolates!
Callum is a HUGE fan of No Muu, so I've come up with a solution to the Easter Egg conundrum - a homemade Easter egg, filled with their amazing products. It's quite literally a chocolate lovers dream!
You will need:
- 14oz (400g) good quality dairy-free dark chocolate
- 2 drops flavoured essence (such as vanilla, orange, lemon, raspberry)
- 1 Egg mould (ideally an egg shape in 2 halves – a good mould can be bought from Lakeland)
- Flat silicone pastry brush
- Selection of dairy-free chocolates (such as No Muu)
- Greaseproof paper
- Ribbon, Easter straw paper, Easter decorations
Method:
In a large bowl, break up the dairy-free chocolate and place over a saucepan of boiling water, being careful not to let the bowl touch the water. Leave to melt the chocolate for just a few minutes, add the flavoured essence and then stir until well combined and of a smooth consistency.
Leave the mixture to cool for 5 minutes otherwise it will be too runny to work with.
Taking one ½ of the egg mould, spoon roughly a ¼ of the melted dairy-free chocolate mix into one of the moulds and use the pastry brush to spread thickly over the mould. Make sure that the sides are all well coated evenly.
Repeat this process with the other mould.
Leave the chocolate to set before chilling for 5 minutes in the fridge. *IMPORTANT - don’t leave for any longer as the chocolate will lose its glossy shine!)
Re-melt the remainder of the chocolate, and repeat the process of coating each mould, saving roughly 1 tbsp of the melted chocolate for later on.
Using a sharp knife, being very careful, scrape any excess chocolate from around the rim of the mould so that you are left with a smooth and level finish – this is really important as it will help for when gluing the 2 halves together
Cover a work surface with greaseproof paper and then turn out the chocolate, very gently pulling away from the moulds to reduce the chances of the chocolate cracking.
Scrunch up some of the greaseproof paper, lay one egg on its back and fill with your selection of dairy-free chocolates.
Melt the 2 tbsp kept back of the melted chocolate and then brush it all around the edge of the egg halves. Using the egg half laying on the greaseproof paper as an anchor, put the other egg half on top and press very gently together to glue them.
Leave the egg to fully cool and set.
Tie some ribbon around the egg to finish, and to help keep it glued together.
